THE PLACE

As part of the France Romania Season, La Communauté inavouable returned to Romania in May 2019, after the capital Bucharest in September 2018, in Maramures. Located in the north-east of the country, south of the Ukraine, this still largely rural region has managed to preserve its traditions despite the communist era.

The facility opened its doors to the Painters’ Colony, a painting school founded in 1896, under the influence of Impressionism, restored and inaugurated in 2017.  The hosting of the (theatre) Museum marks the renewal of this place which received the first European prize for its innovative architecture and which foresees a large programme of international residencies. This edition revealed new faces of contemporary Romania. Here is a selection of portraits from this edition.

PERFORMANCE

In Baia Mare, the famous traditional music group IZA, which played at the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris last December, played the game of an encounter in our stage set-up. The four musicians presented pieces related to the themes of the project and put into voice and song extracts from Hamlet-Machine.

And Nicolas Pélissier played in extreme slow motion Erik Satie’s Gymnopédies, composed at the end of the 19th century when the Colonie des peintres was created in Baia Mare, under the influence of the impressionist movement.
